9 News HD: Eli Lilly’s weight-loss pill, Foundayo, has received a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), bringing the medicine one step closer to approval across the European Union.

The EMA recommended the pill for weight management and the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. However, the European Commission must still make the final decision before Foundayo can receive EU-wide marketing approval.

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a medicine that helps control appetite and reduce food intake. It is taken once a day and can be used alongside a healthy diet and physical activity. Unlike some other weight-loss pills, it can be taken at any time of the day, with or without food.

The EMA’s recommendation is based on studies involving more than 4,740 adults who were overweight or had obesity. After 72 weeks, participants taking Foundayo lost around 5% to 11% of their body weight, depending on the dose. Those who received a placebo lost around 2% to 2.5%.

The medicine may offer another option for people who prefer a daily pill instead of weight-loss injections. Foundayo has already launched in the United States and the United Kingdom, while the company is seeking approval in several other countries.

However, the pill can cause side effects. The EMA reported that nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea were among the most common problems, especially when the dose was increased.

If the European Commission approves Foundayo, it will add another oral treatment option for adults who meet the medical requirements for weight management or type 2 diabetes.

The final EU decision is still pending. Patients should consult a healthcare professional to understand whether this type of treatment is suitable for them.
