Viral Elephant Rescue Video Predates Nepal Floods

A viral video claiming to show an elephant rescuing a man during the devastating floods in Nepal has been found to be unrelated to the disaster.

The 20-second clip began circulating widely on social media after the August 26, 2026 floods in Nepal. Posts claimed that the footage showed an elephant saving a man who was swept away by powerful floodwaters.

However, an investigation found that the same footage had already been circulating online from August 9, 2026 — 17 days before the Nepal floods.

What does the viral video show?

The video shows a man being carried through fast-moving, muddy water before an elephant approaches him. The animal appears to assist the man, who is later seen alongside the elephant.

Social media posts presented the footage as a dramatic rescue during the recent floods in Nepal.

There is, however, no credible evidence linking the video to the August 26 disaster.

Video was online before Nepal floods

A reverse-image search of frames from the viral footage traced the clip to multiple social media uploads dated August 9, 2026.

An Indian news outlet, Ei Samay, published the footage on Facebook on August 9. The same sequence was also found in a YouTube video uploaded by Bangladeshi outlet Nagorik Protidin on the same date.

Another Indian Facebook page, Sanjay Pera News, also shared the footage on August 9, although it claimed the incident occurred in Assam without providing evidence to confirm the location.

The matching footage demonstrates that the video was already online more than two weeks before the Nepal floods.

What happened in Nepal?

On August 26, a major flash flood struck Nepal's Rasuwa district near the country's border with China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

The disaster caused widespread destruction along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems, damaging homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

Rescue operations were launched as authorities searched for people missing after the devastating floods.

Despite the timing of the viral posts, the elephant video cannot be evidence of an animal rescue during this particular disaster because the footage predates the flooding.
